Rivercourse 2005 was June 12-17th, again at Lake Logan Center in Hawyood County. This year we accepted 24 campers, all boys and housed them in four cottages, lakeside. (There was only one girl application.)
The weather worked against us on opening day, Sunday, June 12th, with rain all day, continuing into Monday, making the river fast and high and very muddy. As a result we postponed stocking until Tuesday. Again, the campers loved that activity. In fact, any interactive activity was a hit, and we included more this year. We had a terrific group of boys ranging in age from 13 to 16, and from all over the state. They found out about camp mostly from TU chapters, newspapers, and the internet. They had varying skills in casting, fly fishing, and fly tying, but bonded very well. They were a great bunch of campers. We were staffed by volunteer TU members from all over the state, as well as Tennessee and South Carolina. Rivercourse is growing, and we welcomed the participation of these newcomers, as well as repeat staff. Stocking Trout We had speakers from the NCWRC, F.S., Warren Wilson College, Riverlink, Haywood County Soil and Water District, as well as prominent TU members from across the state. Again, fly tying was a huge hit. During any free time, they all rushed to the vises. We even had two award winning tiers in our ranks, from Pa. and NC. All in all, it was a great week, and we thank all who participated to help make it a huge success. Betsy Craig, NCTU Rivercourse Director Dick Heald, NCTU Rivercourse Assistant Director Text |
